Celebrating 40 Years: How Joan Benoit Samuelson Sparked a Women’s Running Revolution

Few athletes are known simply by their first name. But to the running world, Olympic gold medalist at the 1984 Olympic Games, Joan Benoit Samuelson, is just “Joanie.” Forty years later, we talked with Joanie and four of the thousands of professional runners who crossed the finish line at the 2024 TD Beach to Beacon 10k about the progress that has been made since that August day in 1984, and where progress is still needed.

More than 6,500 runners took to the roads of Cape Elizabeth, Maine on August 3rd for the TD Beach to Beacon 10k Road Race.
