It’s been a busy week for women’s sports, but most of the action has been taking place off the court and the field. Let’s quickly get into the headlines and then talk more about why it matters.
Tuesday:
Caitlin Clark had the second-best selling basketball jersey last fall, regardless of gender. The only player to surpass her? The one and only Steph Curry.
The Women’s Professional Soccer League (WPSL) is launching a second division, tailored for domestic players aspiring to compete at the next level.
Wednesday:
The PWHL announced its next expansion team: Vancouver. Starting next season, there will be seven PWHL teams in just the league’s third season.
Construction began on the 12 acre, $150 million performance center for the Portland Thorns and Portland’s new WNBA team. It will be the first training facility to support a NWSL and WNBA team.
Thursday:
Lauren and Jrue Holiday became investors of the NWSL’s North Carolina Courage. The former USWNT star and two-time Olympic gold medalist will be an active owner, providing invaluable insight to the team and its players.
Friday:
Ahead of the 2025 WNBA season, ticket prices are soaring more than ever before. There has been a 43% year-over-year increase in average WNBA ticket price, up from $122 in 2024 to $173 in 2025. Mind you, this season hasn’t even started yet.
What’s the main takeaway from this week’s business of women’s sports? It’s that now is the time to invest, and to invest for the long term. There are no more excuses. These headlines show us that there’s a huge market for women’s sports, and providing more opportunities for women athletes is good business.
Here at VOICEINSPORT, you know we’re all in on the business of women’s sports. It’s why we decided to launch VOICEINSPORT Apparel. 100% of profits from our gear goes back to supporting girls in sport. We donate premium memberships to women athletes with every purchase of VIS Apparel.
When girls and women in sport have access to opportunities and resources, they will grow and thrive. No matter the level, continuing to invest in women’s sports is critical. So keep using your VOICE and bringing MoreVIS to the big business that is women’s sports.
