Last Monday, we had one of the biggest events in women’s sports: the 2025 WNBA Draft. An exciting night for women’s basketball, 1.46 million people watched college’s brightest stars get drafted. After the league’s success last year, there’s no doubt that people will continue to watch their favorite players ball out in the W.
If there’s one thing that we want to remind new fans who may be watching the WNBA for the first time, it’s this: There’s no room for hate in the W. We learned a lot from last season, including how fast bigotry could permeate the league.
This is why the WNBA announced that they’re creating a task force that will combat online hate and abuse towards players and teams. Here’s what Commissioner Cathy Engelbert had to say about why they felt this task force was necessary: “We want to ensure that the WNBA remains a space where everyone -- players, fans and corporate partners -- feel safe, valued and empowered.”
