How the '99ers Changed Women's Sports Forever
By Charlotte Cronister

The U.S. Women’s National Soccer Team—who we all know as the USWNT—is one of the best to ever do it. From international women’s soccer to representing the red, white, and blue, the USWNT is legendary. Each USWNT has made significant contributions for not just women in sport, but in society too.

But there’s one team that truly set the tone for the future of the USWNT: the ‘99ers. Competing in the third women’s FIFA World Cup, the 1999 USWNT opened the public’s eyes to the spectacle that is women’s sports. And now, the team’s impact will be showcased to an even wider audience.

Early last week, Deadline announced that Netflix was developing a feature film on the ‘99ers. The film will be based off of Jeré Longman’s book, The Girls of Summer: The US Women’s Soccer Team and How It Changed the World. The story will explore the players and their journey winning the World Cup and changing women’s sports.
