It’s Time for Title IX to Include Dance and Cheer

Title IX was an important milestone in history that propelled women’s sports to new heights. What we don’t discuss, though, is how Title IX excludes a variety of sports including competitive dance and cheerleading. Here’s why.

In 2010, a US district court case in Connecticut ruled that cheerleading was not a sport and therefore not subjected to the law of Title IX. As a result, competitive cheer and dance programs at high schools and universities have gone underfunded and faced neglect, leaving their athletes vulnerable to discrimination.
