The United States Women’s National Team finished their camp in Denver, CO, with a 3-0 win over the Japan National Team. Kennedy Wesley scored her first international goal and gained her first assist in the win over Japan.
Wesley came off the bench for the US and quickly contributed an assist for the US Team’s first goal of the night, heading the ball to Naomi Girma who fired it into the net.
Wesley also helped the US score their last goal of the night, shooting a corner that raised the score to 3-0 US.
Her first international assist. Her first international goal. All in one night.
It was a match Wesley would never forget, and her teammates are just as excited.
I think it’s so exciting anytime someone gets their first goal. Kennedy is such a great person and teammate. We are so happy for her,” USWNT teammate Rose Lavalle said.
For Wesley, it felt unreal. “I’m super excited, I literally could not dream of it itself,” she said.
Beyond the points she helped get on the board, Wesley showed poise and professionalism as she came off the bench against Japan. “To come off the bench and do that takes composure,” USWNT head coach Emma Hayes said. “She trusted herself in the moment, and she earned it.”
The next time Wesley steps onto the pitch, she’ll do it as an international goal scorer. Catch her playing for the San Diego Wave this NWSL season.
And for the Colorado-based fans, be sure to watch Wesley play fellow USWNT Lindsey Heaps when the Wave plays the Denver Summit on April 25th.
