SMU Making Moves
NCAA Division I soccer is heating up. On Wednesday, September 25, the Southern Methodist University (SMU) Mustangs showed out with their 4-0 win over the Pitt Panthers. Today, October 5th, they notched another ACC win, holding Cal to just one goal.
In their last three matches, SMU has held their opponents (Pitt, Miami, and Cal), to one goal combined—the one scored today by Cal.
That kind of consistency comes from strong leadership in goal. Enter Aubrey Brown.
Aubrey Brown is the star goalie for SMU. A leader on the field and in the community, Brown excels in goal and in the classroom.
About Aubrey Brown
Brown has played a large role on and off the pitch in her time at SMU. The junior from Irving, TX, has always had a heart for leadership. “For me, leadership has always started with something simpler: connection,” said Brown in an article about her journey as a team leader.
In her time at SMU, Brown has joined the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) and the Black Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (BSAAC), serving as the Vice President and President of each.
“ Leadership has always started with something simpler: connection.”
In these leadership roles, Brown has been able to grow in her commitment to service and community-building in the University Park area. She developed opportunities for her team and other athletes to come together and give back to their community with volunteer activities.
Brown also had the opportunity to attend the Atlantic Coast Conference Unity Tour, traveling the nation’s most notable civil rights landmarks.
Brown has reflected on her experiences in SAAC and BSAAC, stating, “If I can streamline the process, create accessible opportunities, and build programs that feel rewarding and fun, I can help others make the impact they already want to make.”
In her studies and involvement in SMU’s Tower Scholars Program, Brown has found ways to grow as a person outside of soccer. She encourages other student athletes to explore their identity and purpose outside of sports as well. For Brown, leadership is all encompassing and can have a ripple effect on entire communities.
Brown’s impact on her team is clearly evident in the way they show up on the field and get things done. Community mindset and leadership are game changers when it comes to sports and leaving your mark on the world.
With athletes like Brown at the helm, SMU is primed to have a banner season. Brown shows us that success on the field begins with commitment outside of sport and using your platform to give back to those around you.
