When Salima Tete receives the ball in midfield, the game rarely slows down. Within seconds she’s already moving forward, scanning the field and pushing play toward the attacking circle. It’s a style that has made her an important presence for the India women’s national field hockey team, where her speed and awareness help drive India's attacking play.

That impact becomes even more important during tournaments like the 2026 Women’s FIH Hockey World Cup Qualifiers, where every match demands focus, discipline, and teamwork.

For Tete, however, the journey to this stage began far from international stadiums.

She grew up in Jharkhand, a region in India where hockey is deeply woven into the local culture. Many children in the area pick up a stick at a young age, often playing on dusty grounds and makeshift fields. Tete was one of them.

What began as a childhood passion soon turned into something more serious as coaches noticed her natural speed and instinct on the field. Her ability to read the game and react quickly helped her stand out early.

But reaching the international level requires far more than talent.

Team Mindset

The transition from local competitions to representing India required years of training, discipline, and mental resilience. Tete credits the support of her teammates and coaches for helping her grow along the way.

“We lose together and we win together,” she once said when speaking about the team’s approach to competition.

That mindset reflects the reality of hockey itself. Midfielders carry one of the toughest responsibilities on the field. They must connect defense and attack while constantly moving across large areas of the pitch.

Tete thrives in that role.

Her ability to shift quickly between defending and creating attacking opportunities has made her an essential part of India’s playing style. In high pressure matches, midfield players often dictate the tempo of the game.

Pressure is something every international athlete faces, but Salima approaches it with a calm mindset.

“Pressure will be there on every player,” she explained in an interview. “I just focus on playing for my team.”

That perspective has helped her stay grounded even as expectations grow around the Indian women’s team.

“Playing for India has given me everything I could have asked for.”

Inspiring the Next Generation

Tete’s rise has also become a source of inspiration for young athletes across the country. For many girls watching from small towns and training grounds, Tete’s story shows that talent can emerge from anywhere.

Opportunities for women in sport continue to expand, and international competitions organized by the International Hockey Federation have played a major role in increasing visibility for women’s hockey.

For the Indian team, tournaments like the World Cup qualifiers represent an opportunity to compete against strong international opponents and continue building momentum.

For Tete, representing her country is something she deeply values.

“Playing for India has given me everything I could have asked for,” she has said about the experience of wearing the national jersey.

That sense of pride is shared by many athletes who grow up dreaming of competing on the international stage.

As India continues competing internationally, players like Salima Tete represent a new generation shaping the future of the India women’s national field hockey team. Her journey from a small village in Jharkhand to the international stage shows how far dedication and belief can take an athlete. And somewhere on a dusty hockey field in India, another young player is picking up a stick for the first time, dreaming of following the same path.
