ATHLETES TAKE CAPITOL HILL: FIGHTING FOR FAIRNESS IN WOMEN'S SPORTS

On National Girls and Women in Sports Day, VOICEINSPORT Brings Women Athletes to D.C. to Demand Real Change.

Washington, D.C. – February 5, 2025 – The time for change is now. On National Girls and Women in Sports Day, women student-athletes from across the country will take Capitol Hill by storm, speaking out about the real, systemic inequities that continue to plague women’s sports. VOICEINSPORT (VIS) and the VOICEINSPORT Foundation are leading the charge, hosting the largest gathering of women athletes to ever brief members of Congress. Our message is clear: The biggest threats to girls’ and women’s sports are the lack of participation opportunities, unequal scholarships, and inequitable treatment—not the presence of transgender women.

This historic briefing coincides with next week's reintroduction of the Fair Play for Women Act, a bill that will strengthen Title IX protections, demand accountability, and expand opportunities for women athletes at all levels. The bill, championed by Sen. Chris Murphy (CT) and Reps. Alma Adams (NC-12), Suzanne Bonamici (OR-1), and Lori Trahan (MA-3), represents a real solution to the gender disparities in sports.

“This is about fighting for the rights of all women in sports,” said Stef Strack, Founder & CEO of VOICEINSPORT & VOICEINSPORT Foundation. “The real issue isn’t trans women. The real issue is systemic discrimination, the institutions that violate Title IX without consequence, and the leaders who refuse to enforce the law. Girls and women are being denied opportunities every single day. That is what we need to focus on.”

The Urgency of This Moment

The passage of H.R.28, the so-called “Protection of Women and Girls in Sports Act,” is a dangerous distraction from the true inequities in athletics. This bill is not about protecting girls —it is an anti-trans piece of legislation that does nothing to address the real struggles girls face. Women athletes at this briefing will share their own experiences with discrimination and exclusion, highlighting:

  • 93% of NCAA schools offer disproportionately more athletic opportunities to men (GAO Study, 2024).

  • 1.13 million fewer sports opportunities for girls at the high school level (National Federation of State High School Associations, 2019).

  • 95% of NIL Collective funds going to male athletes, deepening the financial gap for women in college sports.

  • Over 90% of schools evaluated by VIS Advocates were found non-compliant with Title IX according to EADA data.

“Women’s sports are underfunded, under-supported, and undervalued. The Fair Play for Women Act ensures that schools are held accountable and that girls finally get the opportunities they deserve,” said VIS Advocate Maggie Munson (University of Wisconsin-Madison Cross Country & Track).

The Event: A Call to Action

The 2025 Capitol Hill Day Briefing will take place on February 5th from 2:00-3:30 PM EST in the Kennedy Room of the Russell Senate Building. Attendees will hear from Senator Murphy, Stef Strack, Title IX experts, and VIS Advocates, who will share firsthand accounts of the discrimination they have faced and outline the path forward to true equity in sports.

“Coming to Capitol Hill offers a unique and powerful opportunity to reshape the narrative around gender equity in sports. As we gather to champion the Fair Play for Women Act, I invite you to join us in making our voices heard. Together, we can confront the real issues and drive meaningful change. Stand with us as we strive to ensure every girl and woman in sports is valued for her true worth.”  said VIS Advocate Victoria Bossong (Harvard Track & Field).
