Most athletes try to stay in control and stick to what they know.

Sifan Hassan runs straight into the unknown.

That mindset has helped Hassan achieve what few athletes have ever done. The Dutch distance runner is an Olympic and World Champion who has excelled across an extraordinary range of events, from the 1500m to the marathon. Throughout her career, she has broken records, won multiple global titles, and became known for taking on challenges that many athletes would avoid. Whether competing on the track or the roads, Hassan has consistently pushed beyond conventional limits, establishing herself as one of the most versatile runners of her generation.

This success comes because Hassan isn’t scared of what she hasn’t done before.

Switching distances. Taking risks mid-race. Pushing through pain when everything says stop. Her career has never been about playing it safe. It’s driven by something else entirely: curiosity.

“I’m a very curious person,” she says. “If you never hit the wall, you will never find out what is on the other side.”

That mindset shows up in how she competes. She doesn’t avoid discomfort. She moves toward it. Discomfort keeps her engaged.

And in the most intense moments, when the race is on the line, her thinking becomes simple.

“Not much is going through my mind,” she says. “I just focus on putting strength into my arms and legs and getting there first.”

It sounds simple, but it isn’t. Hassan had to hone this mindset throughout her career—through setbacks and triumphs.

Career Challenges

Earlier in her career, setbacks hit Hassan hard. When things went wrong, she took it personally. She shut herself off, replayed mistakes, and carried the weight alone.

“I made setbacks too important,” she admits. “I could hide for days, feeling angry and sad.”

Changing this reaction took more than changing her performance. She needed to change her perspective, too.

During this time, Hassan started opening up and letting people in. And slowly, those moments stopped feeling like failures and started becoming part of the process.

Now, she sees things differently.

“I actually enjoy challenges,” she says. “When things get tough, I know that makes me human.”

That shift is what changed how she competes. Not just as an athlete, but as a competitor who understands what growth really looks like.

“Winning makes you great,” she says. “But losing makes you great too, as long as you don’t stop.”

Hassan’s growth has come from evolving her mindset. And evolving is something she has done throughout every other aspect of her life, too.

“Winning makes you great. But losing makes you great too, as long as you don’t stop.”

Embracing Change

Moving from Ethiopia to the Netherlands at a young age forced Hassan into the unknown long before elite competition did. She had to embrace a new language and culture. Nothing felt familiar. It was uncomfortable and overwhelming for Hassan.

But it also changed everything.

Hassan started running as a way to cope. It got her outside and let her feel free, if only for that time. Over time, running became something more.

At first, running simply gave Hassan a reason to be outside again. But as she spent more time with local training groups and coaches, it started to open doors she never expected. What began as a way to cope with a difficult transition slowly became a source of confidence. With every race and every new challenge, she started to see possibilities for herself that she had never considered before.

That feeling stayed with her as her career progressed. Running was no longer just about results or competition. It became a way to keep learning, growing, and discovering what she was capable of. The more she challenged herself, the more she realized that limits were often meant to be questioned rather than accepted.

Defying Limitations

Above all, Hassan refuses to limit herself. From 1500m to the marathon, she continues to explore what she is capable of.

“I don’t want to be put in a box,” she says. “I love variety. Being challenged works for me.”

Behind that mindset is a strong foundation of loved ones who care about her as a person, not just an elite athlete.

“My family and friends care about who I am, not what I achieve,” she says

That perspective keeps the pressure Hassan feels in check.

“I train hard, but I also rest, laugh with friends, and take time off when I need it,” she says.

Mental strength is not just about pushing harder. It is about knowing when to step back. Hassan embraces that mindset through time with her inner circle, keeping her connected to what really matters.

Always Exploring, Always Pushing

Hassan’s story is not about medals or records—though she certainly has a lot of those. It’s about discovering limits and then questioning them.

“I have more stamina than I thought,” she says. “As long as you keep taking small steps forward.”

That’s what makes her different. In a sport built on control and precision, Hassan chooses uncertainty.

She doesn’t need to have everything figured out. She just keeps going.

And she always keeps exploring.
